A set of Jack-O-Lanterns with different expressions.

The original meaning of the term Jack-O-Lantern didn't apply to pumpkins, but instead a specific type of person.
The term meant "man with a lantern" or "night watchman".
One of the first traditions was created in the British Isles, where they took vegetables and made lanterns out of them.
In America, it was easy to acquire pumpkins and they were easy to carve into, so people decided to use them for lanterns.
